On Vacation

Thanks to Wm Rowe

When I was a kid my whole family would pile in the car to head to the beach for a week of family togetherness and vacation. I always will remember that my dad would go around checking the doors and windows to make sure they are sealed tight and locked so that no one could get in while we were gone. He would also turn off the hot water heater and shut off the breakers to the house. I always thought this was a bit overkill until I went on a vacation myself to come home and find a pipe had burst in my house and flooded my entire basement and the backyard while I was gone. Unfortunately the neighbors were also out of town so there was no one there to notice and shut the water off at the street. After that lovely little incident I found out that it could have been prevented with a motion detector attached to my home security systems. The motion of the water would have set off the alarm and someone would have come to the house to turn off the water.

My hopes for the new seaosn of Boardwalk Empire

Guest post written by Tina Burgens
When it comes to the second seasons of shows, a lot of the time they just aren't nearly as good as the first seasons. But I really hate when you see that happen. Then other times the second seasons of shows are so much better than the first season. Well I hope that the second one is what happens when it comes to the second season of Boardwalk Empire coming on this fall. I have some really high hopes for it and I'm pretty sure the show can reach and surpass those expectations by far!
I've been doing a lot of looking around online to see if I can read anything written by someone who's seen a new episodes form the second season or something. While I was online looking that up the other day, I ran across some clear reviews. I showed them to my husband and after that we decided to change over our home internet service to one of the packages that we found on there.
I'm really looking forward to this new season adn I have a feeling that this season is just going to be downright amazing. They have the talent and the budget backing it up to where it's definitely possible.

DIFFERENT UPBRINGINGS

Different upbringings

Thanks for the guest post by Jo Levy

When my wife and I got married, we were faced with a few issues that I had not predicted would be a problem. We got married right out of college, so we did not have any money saved and I was actually in a bit of debt. When I was growing up, I was expected to have a summer job each summer and I even worked part-time during the week after school. We did not have extravagant Christmas presents or birthday presents and I did not have a car of my own until I bought a used car in college. My wife however was brought up completely differently. She never had to work a day in her life until she graduated from college. Her first day of work was actually the week after we got home from our honeymoon. Her parents told her that she had her whole life to work and that she should enjoy her childhood while she still could. After we got married and I suggested we make a budget, she could not believe that she was not going to be able to spend money like she used to. The only thing she agreed to at first was looking online and searching “Shop electricty rates TEXAS” to see how we could save on energy rates. Thankfully she eventually started to see that if we didn’t stick to a budget that we were going to run out of money.

POI BOY (YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!)

Kalaunuiohua--Ceremonial Poi Pounder

I knew it was gonna be just a matter of time...

...before my mother gave me
"THE LECTURE!"

"Kalau,"  she said,
"You're a big boy now...
If you want to eat poi,
You gotta fetch for yourself!"

So here I am, folks, just pounding the beat...
...uh, poi!

Ah, for the good old days when things were a bit easier...

CORE STRENGTH? OR SNORE STRENGTH?

Ryder Silas, Multitasking
(Photo courtesy of Lele and Bryson)

Okay, so let me explain what was happening here...

I was simply working on my stretches--
my back, hamstrings, abductor muscles...

...you know, generally building up my
core strength.

The trade winds were calming, the soft Hawaiian music soothing, the voice of the instructor--
oh, so relaxing...

...just dreaming of cruising north
on Kuhio Highway,
the sun beaming down on me
as I'm chillin' big time
in my aqua Fiat 500 Cabrio...

...trippin' about catching rays
and checkin' out the babes on Anini Beach...

Ah!  I can't help it!
I'm just Ryder Silas (they call me BULA),
and I'm keepin' it real!

What a life!
And I'm stuck in my fantasy, feeling check,
miles and miles from all the
urban sprawl, traffic, and commotion...

...and before I know it...

I'm smack dab at the intersection of
Pilates

DYLAN AND SPAM MUSUBI

Dylan Imaikalani Watanabe
Pre-Soccer Ritual
(Photo courtesy of Erin and Pua)

Ha-ha!

So you thought I had retired from sports, huh?

How wrong could you be?

You know me--Dylan the boy wonder!--unafraid to try new things, explore unfamiliar horizons, and go where no other 5-year-old has dared to go!

So far this year, I've participated in three sports--baseball, basketball, and football.  Now, I've put on the cleats and blue uniform, and I'm ready to kick some...

Soccer balls!

But, first, just like the big boys in the professional leagues, I gotta have my pre-game ritual.

And there's nothing more appropriate than a local Kauai boy having a delicious...

SPAM MUSUBI!

Mmm-mmm...so ono!

Dwyane Wade, Ichiro, Vince Young, Lionel Messi--you guys don't know what you're missing!  Get with the flow and follow the example of your island homeboy, Dylan Imaikalani Watanabe, and head on down to your local McDonald's and tell them to get with the Hawaiian McProgram and serve up some delicious

SPAM MUSUBI!*

*Spam Musubi is a block of rice with a slice of grilled Spam on top with nori (seaweed) wrapping to hold the concoction together.

OKAY, WHO'S NEXT?

Ryder Silas
10 months old

Okay, Teach!  Whaddaya think?  Am I doing this right?

Good technique, Ryder!  But there's just one small problem.

What's that?

Location, location, location!

Huh?

You did it backwards!  It's thirty rapid compressions on the CHEST and two slow breaths in the MOUTH!

OOPS!  My bad!  No wonder they ain't responding!

LESSON FROM A SEAGULL

Seagull Explorer
Mukilteo, WA
(Hawaiian Odysseus photo)

You know, here's the thing.

I hate the water.
          I'd rather be dry.

I'm lazy.
I'd rather have the easy way out.

I'm scared to try new things.
I want to play it safe.

But here's a reality check.

If I don't get out of my comfort zone,

and if I don't give life my best effort,

and if I don't take risks now and then,

I'll end up stranded and starving on this beach.

So, enough of the excuses already.
Oh, could I just think about it for a while?

I'M GOING FOR IT, BABY!
